The warm and wet spring we’ve Seen over the past month may mean we could be Seeing more mosquitoes this season.   Health department officials in Lake, Cuyahoga, Stark and Summit counties all agree that the rain and warmer temperatures may cause an increase in mosquitoes this season.   “I’m not happy at all about it, not a bit. Because I don’t want my daughter to get bit,” said Abby Justine of Akron.   Lake County officials said rain over the past few week left large areas of standing water, a breading ground for mosquitoes where they lay their eggs.   There are some areas with a controlled mosquito population. Hand-made nesting poles sit along Portage Lakes, named the Purple Martin Capital of Ohio. A single adult bird, Purple Martin, can eat up to 2,000 mosquitos per day.    “I think that’s awesome and I want to put one in my backyard,” said Justine.    Health officials are reminding residents to take preventive steps The concern is what the mosquitoes could be carrying – like the West Nile Virus (WNV) or Zika.   Health officials said prevention begins with water treatments and draining standing water to control the mosquito population.   Tips to avoid mosquito bites include wearing light colored, long sleeve shirts and pants, and EPA-registered insect repellents.
